Nutella & Love

Yesterday was my husbands birthday, and many of you know (or are about to know) that he moved to the US when he was 19. I met him about 6 months later, and before he knew it, I claimed him for my own. I didn’t even give him a chance to learn the culture, or fully the language before I locked him down. *sheepish grin*

Also, as many of you know, I have a slight obsession with Pinterest… AND Pinterest has a slight obsession with Nutella <3

So behold the fairytale I am about to tell you that mushes all the above mentioned facts.

nutella

As most young kids that are in love, we had to compare notes on all things we loved previous to each other, right? Food is one thing we had in common! I was not one of those skinny, salad eating girls ever in my life… I LOVE desserts, in fact I LOVE sugar. My husband, as sweet as he already is, loves sugar more than me, that’s no easy feat. Afterall, I use to eat candy bars for breakfast in high school. Anyhow, we started to compare notes on desserts one day. I explained to him that I would have to bring him to grandma’s so that he could try my favorite cake “that tastes like heaven”. He said “oh no, my dessert IS heaven, and I will bring you to my grandma’s tomorrow”

We did, in fact go the next day,  and this is what was placed in front of me:

“palacinke” (paul-e-chen-kuh) Sanel added.

Well, I guess here is where my fairytale has an unexpected twist. I did not like them, at all… in fact, it is actually Nutella I do not like. *gasp*

Here is how my fairytale ends: I make my husband the palacinke, that he adores, for his birthday, I’m a good wife like that. I then make mine what I like to call the “Katrina way”. Americans & Bosnians in perfect harmony <3

Strawberry Crepes

You may or may not have seen our crepe cart we made for Miss Alisa's 1st birthday party. Let me tell you a little story about Palacinke and crepes. When my husband started dating he introduced me to his favorite dessert, palacinke. He went on and on about it before I actually got to see, smell, or taste them. I later found out they are indeed actually what we Americans call crepes, with Nutella in/on them. I am not {I know this will disappoint many} not a big fan of Nutella so I really didn't care too much for them. As you might guess this upset my then boyfriend. If it was up to him he could eat them everyday {no joke}. He would, however, need to inlist the help of me to get this ;) I was intemidated by making those flimsy things. So I all but refused. Fast forward a few years, we came upon a crepe shop in an outdoor mall. Once I it occurred to me that I could put anything on a crepe I wanted, this quickly became our favorite spot to be. They later closed down that shop {because midwest Americans do not appreciate them for what they are} and I started to buck up a little and tried my hand at them. I of course messed them up time and time again, until recently....

I snuck into the kitchen, my family oblivious to what was coming, and tried my hand one more time, with no one teaching, hovering, or judging. I quickly realized what I was doing wrong all along, and no Mr. hubby it wasn't the amount of oil, or them temp of the pan... It was the fact that I didn't give it enough set up time! I was so scared that they were going to burn before. What about you all? Do you love crepes? Are you intemidated by making them? What are your favorite ingredients on them? My ingredients of choice are Strawberries, Whip Cream, and Cheesecake pudding. YES! They make that! So goooooddddd........

Crêpe à la Alisa

What fun would shopping in Paris be with no crêpe cart?
My husband loves Nutella... do you? I am not a big fan myself, but I knew this was a must for this party. It was a hit, everyone enjoyed the cart, which was actually a rolling cart we have in our kitchen normally. We added large cardboard rolls on the corners, and added a "top". Okay, you got me! I have to give props where they are due... My husband worked on constructing this masterpiece for at least an hour. Thank you honey. I did however buy the balloons and roses... and staggered those balloons all by myself too :) Yeah me!
